The Carolinas’ New Grid Engine Puts Universities, Utilities and Communities at One Table

A National Science Foundation designation will support a 36-county partnership focused on testing grid technology, workforce pathways and deployment across North and South Carolina.

A new regional partnership in the Carolinas is taking on a problem most people notice only when the lights go out: how to make the electric grid more resilient and easier to modernize. The National Science Foundation selected the Carolinas Grid Engine as one of its Regional Innovation Engines, with UNC Charlotte leading the effort.

The partnership spans 36 counties and brings together universities, utilities, manufacturers, workforce groups, governments and other organizations. NSF says its Engines program is designed to connect research with entrepreneurship, workforce development and community engagement; the Carolinas project applies that model to grid technologies.

South Carolina Research Authority describes a potential federal investment of up to $160 million over the life of the award. That is an announced opportunity, not money already spent or a guaranteed result. The practical test will be whether research reaches communities, whether workers can enter the field, and whether new equipment performs outside a laboratory.
